A short introduction about “La Liga”
“La Liga” is the name of the Spanish Football Championship, known also as “Primera División”. “La Liga” is one of the major football championships around the world and you can enjoy in this competition very big teams such as Real Madrid, FC Barcelona, Atletico Madrid or FC Sevilla. If you are a football fan, you may recognize these names as teams that have won in the last years many important competitions like the UEFA Champions League, Europa League (formerly UEFA Cup) or FIFA Club World Cup.
Speaking about these teams, we have to admit that their success in all these competitions is based on valuable football players, some of these players being recognized as some of the best players all over the world, with many awards won during the time, awards such as Golden Ball or Golden Foot. In most of the cases, these awards are won by important strikers, known as scorers. In the following paragraphs, I will try to introduce you some of the best scorers in “La Liga” over time.
Top scorers in “La Liga” in modern age
In the last years, the top scorers in the Spanish Championship were coming from the most important football teams, namely Real Madrid and FC Barcelona.
The 2016/2017 “La Liga” Championship is ongoing in this period and the actual top scorer for this season is Lionel from FC Barcelona with 19 goals scored during this season, followed by one of his teammates, namely Luis Suarez, with 18 goals. On the 3rd place in the “La Liga” top scorers ranking is Cristiano Ronaldo, from Real Madrid, with 15 goals scored since now. These stats are describing the situation on 23rd of February 2017. So the actual top scorer ranking looks like in Current Season Tab:

Other great strikers that were top scorers in “La Liga” in the last decades include important names like Diego Forlán, Samuel Eto’o, Ronaldo, Raúl, Diego Tristán or Roy Makaay. Diego Forlán was the top scorer in “La Liga” in the season 2004/2005 when he was Villarreal CF’s player and he scored 25 goals, but also in the season 2008/2009 when Diego Forlán was playing for Atletico Madrid and he scored 32 goals. In the season 2004/2005, Diego Forlán has shared the 1st place with Samuel Eto’o, FC Barcelona’s striker. Most of the top scorers in “La Liga” in the last years were coming from the biggest clubs in the Spanish Football Championship. But we have seen that Diego Forlán was playing for a smaller club, namely Villarreal CF. Other top scorers that were playing for smaller clubs in “La Liga” are Diego Tristán and Roy Makaay. They have played for Deportivo La Coruna and were in the 1st place in the top scorer ranking in the season 2001/2002 with 20 goals, respectively in the season 2002/2003 with 29 goals.

The highest goal scorer of all time is Lionel Messi from FC Barcelona, with 327 goals, followed by Cristiano Ronaldo from Real Madrid with 274 goals and TelmoZarra, who scored most of his goals for Athletic Bilbao, with 251 goals. On the 4th place is Hugo Sánchez with 234 goals and on the 5th place is Real Madrid’s symbol, Raúl González with 228 goals.
